A Summary of Max Schilman's "Love is a Fallacy"

I am just a cool, calculating, perspicacious, acute, logical, keen and astute....That were some of the descriptions I can describe myself.......My age now is eighteen years old, but my brain seems to be powerful just like a dynamo, as precise as a chemist's scale, and as as penetrating as a scalpel.....But just think of it....I am just that young.....

I have a roommate in the university named, Petey Bellows...We were similar in same ways but I tell you he is a kind of person that is so emotional, unstable, impressionable but worst of all a faddist....

One afternoon, I saw Petey bellows lying on his bed...I thought that he suffered an appendicitis...That is why I hurriedly told him to stay on his bed and many other things...But when I approached him, he mumbled quickly and looked for a raccoon...Yes!!!A raccoon coat...At that moment I thought that he was not suffering a physical pains but maybe a mental distress... But I realized that I was wrong....He eagerly told me why he like to have a raccoon coat....The reason is that since from the start he wanted to have one of it because all the Big Men were wearing that particular coat but he spent all his money for his textbooks....I told him that raccoon coats were unsanitary and they weigh too much......And worst from that it really smells not so good or let us say..It smells so bad...Yeah...Really bad....

While I was still talking, he made so many interruptions. I can say that he really wants a raccoon coat. He badly "wants" it. He would even do anything just for a raccoon coat.... That was when I remembered that my father had a raccoon coat when he was in his undergraduate days.It lay in a trunk in the attic room back home....It also happened that Petey had something I "wanted...

I am referring to his girl named Polly Espy... Well Polly was not really the girlfriend of Petey but he had rights on her....Or let us say they are what we call BEST FRIENDS...a very close friend...But,all my life i have been coveted to her...But not in emotional in nature...She was a girl who excited the emotions, but I was not one to let my heart rule my head. I wanted Polly for a shrewdly calculated, entirely cerebral reason...I was thinking that I could make Polly mine....She really fits the characteristics for being my future wife....He was girl of carriage, an ease of bearing, a poise that clearly indicated the best of breeding, beautiful but he was not that intelligent...But I know that I can make her as one by my learning...That were some of the characteristics that I had observed with the wives of my fellow lawyers when I was in the freshman years of my law school ....They said that wife who possesses all those characteristics can make the lawyer's career further...

After thinking of all these stuffs, I asked Petey if he and Polly are going on a date or do, they often see each other. He told me that yes, they do but, right now, they have their own dates. I also asked him if he loves Polly. He answered me in a confused or doubtful reply.

The next Monday morning, I returned to my university bringing the raccoon coat of my father. Petey was so happy to see the raccoon coat. I told him that I would only give him the raccoon coat if he allows Polly and me to go on a date. Few minutes later, he told me that it was a deal. He agreed on what would happen if he accepts the coat. The following evening, I had my first date with Polly.

We had a dinner, watched a movie and brought her back home. During those times, I thought that Polly really would be a big challenge for me. The girl had a lack of information. In our next date, we talk about logic...We talk about the fallacy called Dicto Simpliciter which means an argument based on an unqualified generalization..Another one is a fallacy called Hasty Generalization and also the fallacy called the Contradictory Premises....

On the next day of our date, we talked about Ad Misericordiam, False Analogy, and Hypothesis Contrary to Fact and Poisoning the Well. The last fallacy we discussed, I was so pretty amazed of Polly. I can see that she was attentive during our discussions. She was able to answer my question correctly. We even reviewed our past “lessons” again. At first, I had a hard time but then, it went on smoothly. We had this type of talk for about five nights. I told myself that I have made a logician out of Polly and now, she is fit to be my wife...

On the last day of our date....I told her the true feelings I felt to her...But she did not believe in me..She told me that it was only a fallacy..Then she cited all the fallacies we discussed.....I told her that I truly love her...I asked her if she could be mine...But unexpectedly she answered me,"I will not"...I asked her why. She told me that on that same day, she would go steady with Petey. I was so shocked because it’s as if Petey forgot all the things we had and about our deal. I once again asked her why she chose Petey over me.. She then told me that it is all because Petey had a raccoon coat.
